Andromeda Relix is a small rock label from Italy, that introduced us to two great all-female rock bands; CELLULITE STAR being one of them. On their debut album “Explicit Attitude”, they show us, that they’re not afraid to rock out real loud. Besides their own penned material, they also crank out some wild covers of HARDCORE SUPERSTAR and BLONDIE.
All the more reason to find out, if these girls really have such an explicit attitude and what’s keeping them busy... Read on the next interview with CELLULITE STAR....
When was CELLULITE STAR founded and can you please introduce the band members to us?
“CELLULITE STAR was founded in 2004 and after many changes we have consolidated our line-up in 2008 with Silvia Ravazzolo (voice and guitar), Claudia Gamba (lead guitar and backing vocals), Laura Businari (bass and backing vocals) and Lara Tarantini (drums). We are a band of friends, who want to make some noise, travel all around the world and enjoy ourselves by playing live on stage, because music means everything to us! And ofcourse we play melodic punkrock / hard rock!”
Who came up with the name CELLULITE STAR and why did you actually choose this name?
“The name CELLULITE STAR was conceived to present a group of young ladies to the public, that follow a precise style of music. “Cellulite” because cellulite is a common female problem and “Star” is a simple tribute to one of our favorite bands, HARDCORE SUPERSTAR for sure! We play the same kind of music and would like to support the Swedish rock scene, because we feel like we’re part of that scene in a way...”
Did any of the bandmembers play in other bands before CELLULITE STAR and if yes, can you name them? Did you also record anything with them?
“Silvia sang with some unknown seventies rock band, Claudia played with APORIA (female seventies rock band) and LEMMINGS (blues band with guys), Laura played with PANTOMIME (new wave/rock band), Lara played with LADIES ZEPPELIN (emale LED ZEPPELIN tribute band) and LANDSLIDE LADIES (glam rock band with boys). PANTOMIME’s record is still available to the listeners.”
How would you describe your music?
“CELLULITE STAR is a quality trademark in the bright Italian girly-rock'n'roll scene. Four girls with a keen and well-trained ear for powerful and magnetic hard punk’n’roll melodies, who want to present their first debut album, called "Explicit Attitude", which is brimming with gutsy guitar riffs, instantaneously catchy sing-along party-starting choruses and rebellious rock'n'roll attitude!”
Is it still possible for a band to be original in a time, when there is an overflow of bands? And in which aspect does CELLULITE STAR differ from the others?
“We think, that you don’t necessarily have to be original or different from the kind of music you like and want to play, because nobody has said that it is wrong!! Think about blues for instance… It is an evergreen and if you want to play it, you can do everything, you want! ‘Different’, ‘original’ or even ‘innovative’ is not synonymous with good music, groove, attitude, intelligence and feeling, not at all! So we play this kind of ‘not-original’ punk rock and we don’t give a fuck about what the other people say! It’s an evergreen, too! (laughs)”
Who can we see as your musical influences and maybe you can also name some influences of each bandmember individually here?
“As a band, we can name for example HARDCORE SUPERSTAR, VAINS OF JENNA, CRUCIFIED BARBARA, THE DATSUNS, THE S.T.P., GUANO APES, BACKYARD BABIES and many more...”
Silvia: “THE WHO, THE DATSUNS, HARDCORE SUPERSTAR, CRUCIFIED BARBARA, THE KINKS, OASIS, GUANO APES, , THE S.T.P., THE STROKES and....BOSTON!”
Claudia: “IRON MAIDEN, DEEP PURPLE, LED ZEPPELIN, BLACK SABBATH, HARDCORE SUPERSTAR, W.A.S.P., R.J. DIO, EUROPE, RATT, POISON and JUDAS PRIEST.”
Laura: “NINE INCH NAILS, THE CURE, MELISSA AUF DER MAUR, AFTERHOURS, U2, PJ HARVEY, BAUHAUS, FRANK THE BAPTIST, PLACEBO, MERCURY REV, SMASHING PUMPKINS, DEPECHE MODE, EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN and THE CHAMELEON.”.
Lara: “CARCASS, LED ZEPPELIN, L7, BABES IN TOYLAND, MEGADETH, ALICE IN CHAINS, FAITH NO MORE, THE GATHERING, BACKYARD BABIES and SENTENCED.”
How did the press react on your debut album so far? Were there any negative reactions as well and if yes, how do you deal with negative criticism in general?
“The press has been really good towards our debut album “Explicit Attitude”. We are very, very happy with that, because the support, that we’ve received so far, has been almost totally positive! The negative critics are mainly about the production and our sound. Saying that it’s probably too much direct and simple, but the production is one thing and our music and capacity is definitely another thing. I think, that the critics are about the work of other people and not our work. We are open to every suggestion and we appreciate sincerity, so everybody can talk in total freedom.”
Can you tell us how you created the songs/ideas for this album? Please tell us about your writing process and all its different stages.
“The process of creating a new song is very simple: Claudia composes the music and prepares it with all the structures and solos, Silvia writes the lyrics and fits it to the music - according to the message, that we want to pass along - and Laura and Lara both do the arrangement with its groove and feeling. Finally, all together we think about the chorus and the specific sound of the song.”
How did you get in touch with Andromeda Relix, who released your album?
“We sent them a demo, called “Rock Girlz in Action” (2006) and they offered us a collaboration, because they believed in us and our potentiality and capacities.”
What was the most difficult part in making this first album?
“Probably the sound and the production: with a little more time, maybe it would have been more refined. But we don’t care about it very much, because it is pure punk, so maybe it’s pure quality in the end!”
Who writes the lyrics and what are they about?
“Silvia writes the lyrics and she talks about the things in common life, that influence us, like cars, beer, smoking cigarettes, parties and concerts, money and work, love and boys, feelings and attitude. Simple things are our world, because we are simple persons and we think it is real quality nowadays...”
Maybe there are a few songs, you would like to explain a little more?
“There’s nothing to explain: our lyrics are direct and simple as well as our sound. The songs are easy to understand and to sing along to and when you think, that you’ve got the general meanig of the songs, you are simply wrong because they are full of turning points, double meanings and stuffs like that... It’s very funny indeed!!”
Who was responsible for the artwork on your debut CD?
“The artwork was done by Andrea Bedendoat A-media Design, Rovigo (Padova), Italy. He has done a very good job, because it explains our explicit attitude.”
Where can people buy your CD? Please promote CELLULITE STAR here for free!!
“People can buy our CD at our concerts all over Italy or from Negative [http://www.negative.it/] or Andromeda Relix [http://www.andromedarelix.com/]. We are searching for a worldwide distribution, so we can spread the word!”
What's your favorite CELLULITE STAR song and why?
“That’s “Green for Us”, because it talks about cars, high speed, strong emotions and comunicates a sort of phylosophy in life: live and enjoy yourself at high speed....sounds good....!”
How important is the internet for a band like CELLULITE STAR and where can people find you?
“The internet is very important for us as it is an useful tool to promote our band. Also My Space is a great help and we have a beautiful official web site. Andromeda Relix talks about us too and some webzines in our press kit. Some contacts are: http://www.myspace.com/cellulitestar; http://www.cellulitestar.com and http://www.andromedarelix.com.”
Do you handle all the internet business yourself or do you outsource this job?
“We do the main work ourselves, even though the site was created by our good friend and webmaster Alessandro Costa, a.k.a. Kost (email@example.com). He is a real expert, with a degree in Informatic Science and many beautiful works on his curriculum. Soon, we will probably set up a new My Space page, created by him. It’s just a matter of time. There are too many things to do everyday!”
Do you have other hobbies or interests besides playing music in a band?
“Yes, we are four young ladies that study or work: Silvia works for a national bank, Claudia has a Doctor degree in Phylosophy and she is studying, Laura works at a publicity agency and last but not least, Lara is studying languages in Vancouver, Canada. We also like the cinema, arts, sports, travelling, reading good books and going out with friends. We are common people with common interests!”
What can people expect from the live shows of CELLULITE STAR?
“Surelly, an energetic show! A lot of attitude and a great stage presence, high choruses and a lot of groove. CELLULITE STAR are a party band, so our aim is to enjoy ourselves and satisfy the need of noise, party and mess of other people at the same time.”
Do you play any cover songs on stage, and if yes, which covers do you play live?
“We usually play “Call Me” by BLONDIE, “Have You Been Around” by HARDCORE SUPERSTAR and “Die Die Die My Darling” by the MISFITS... Other covers we have been playing were from SKID ROW, TWISTED SISTER and POISON, but we have changed them and we are always searching for new additions!”
Why did you choose to cover “Call Me” (BLONDIE) and “Have You Been Around” (HARDCORE SUPERSTAR) on your debut album?
“The first one is a song, that we like very much and that’s we decided to adjust it with our ideas by making it a little bit more noisy and hard! BLONDIE is an icon for us! The second song is a tribute to the band HARDCORE SUPERSTAR. We have loved them, since the very beginning and we also met them personally, when we presented “Explicit Attitude” in Verona, Italy some months ago - thanx to our good photographer Alex Ruffini [http://www.twostarsphots.com]. They are an amazing band and we support them in every way. We have a lot of fun playing their songs and in the near future we’ll do some other covers as well, such as “Wild boys” and “We Don’t Celebrate Sundays”.”
With which bands did you share the stage already?
“Ohhh - a lot of different bands! We want to mention some of them: LA MENADE, SILVER DIRT, FRANCESCO-C., TRE ALLEGRI RAGAZZI MORTI, BIG GUNS, BABY RUTH, SEVENTY TIMES SEVEN, PINK LIZARD, MUMBLE RUMBLE....”
Did you learn anything vital from those bands?
“First of all, we learned how to get the right attitude and a good groove. Also very important is how to make a good show.”
Are there any funny stories to tell about things that happened on stage or during a tour?
“Living our lives is simply funny: cars broke down in the middle of the street, beer and spontaneous parties outside the pubs and clubs, playing with fire and saying crazy things to people only for the pleasure of teasing them and to make some noise, the phylosophy of the Autogrill, driving trucks and pullman through Italy, backstage make-up sessions, friendship with other bands and fans... Everything is really exciting and contagious like a laugh in our simple life! Bad times are always turned into good times, when we are together!”
Did you ever witness any male groupies? Let’s say guys, who want to have more than just an autograph or a guitar pick from the band members?
“Male groupies are the rule...We have an audience composed mainly of guys, so it is very common, but we don’t care a lot about this kind of attention, because we appreciate true affection, support and trust that only real frienship can offer. We think, it’s quite easy and normal for female bands...”
With which band would you like to go on tour, if you could pick any band of your choice? (In my opinion, CHERRY LIPS, who are also on Andromeda Relix, would be a great choice!!!)
“Of course HARDCORE SUPERSTAR!!!!! They are our true passion! Perhaps even CRUCIFIED BARBARA or VAINS OF JENNA. We have a lot of things in common and we do love European bands... Doing an European tour with them would be great!!!Let’s make some noise!!!”
What do you like better: playing live on stage or composing new songs in the studio?
“We prefer playing on stage, because it’s a lot of fun! In fact, composing new songs is not a problem to us, as we have so many great ideas!”
Do you feel, that you have an ‘explicit attitude’?
“You bet! For sure, we are just what we want to be and we don’t follow any authority, managers or orders from anybody! We just do what we please, every time. I think, you can call it freedom.”
What is the metal and rock scene like in Italy, where you come from? Are there any good clubs to play live?
“Unfortunately, the club scene is very weak here. There are a lot of bands, but many are hardly being considered to play, which is indeed a real sad thing. Italy is a bad place for hard rock, punk or any other kind of hard music...You always have to accept compromises of any kind. We have decided to get away from this situation by trying to play abroad. Here and there are some clubs, but they are not exactly the ‘musician’s paradise’ at all. It’s really a matter of mentality.”
What are the future plans for CELLULITE STAR (short and long term, please)?
“Playing, more playing and kicking all asses around Italy and Europe and if possible, in the near future.”
Do you think, that women in rock and metal still need the kind of recognition 'zines like Metal Maidens give to them?
“Yes, your work is very useful to support different new bands, and we think it is still very important, because there are some very good musicians out there! New bands really need every kind of support, they can get!”
Our online magazine is based in Holland (or the Netherlands, if you like). What else do you know about our country, besides the fact that we have colourful tulips and beautiful windmills?
“We have another female drummer, Giudy, that is doing an Erasmus study in Utrecht. She is living there for 6-8 months and she tells us a lot of different and fantastic things about your beautiful country.. Hopefullty, we’ll play there very soon in some clubs, too. She talks about the parks, parties, music, houses and places, arts and people.... We can only imagine what it means to live there in a multicultural society! An open-minded society for sure.”
Are there any important gigs on the agenda for CELLULITE STAR?
“Probably we will sign up with Get Rock Agency, so in the near future we will play in some good and different clubs and also travel a little bit.. However, we are not in a hurry and in the meantime, we have got a lot of things to do.”
What's the best thing about being in a band? And maybe there is an inferior side too, that you would like to mention here?
“The band means everything to us: we are good friends and we support eachother completely, even in the more difficult situations. Common life is like a game or a war and we are going to win this war! It’s like Lemmy once said “Born to lose, live to win!”. Being a band is a real school of life and we have grown up as very mature women, thanks to this small community. I think, that everybody dreams of being part of a rock band....like “School Of Rock”- the movie!”
What are your plans for the next CELLULITE STAR album? Are you most likely going to release it independently or are you looking for a big record label to release your second album?
“To get signed at one of the big record labels – that’s out of question! It could be a way to show what we can do. We think that being a musician is a fantastic profession, so we need that kind of support that only media, a great label and a big audience has to offer!”
Do you have any personal messages for our readers?
“Spread the news and buy our CD - we need you!”
Is there anything you’d like to add to this interview? Maybe there’s something we forgot to mention, that is essential for the story of CELLULITE STAR? Maybe a last newsflash?
“Stay in touch for more news! We are working on some compilations albums here in Italy, so keep an eye out for that! Also, we are going to play a lot too, so check our My Space page and the official site regularly… That would be great!”
The famous last words in this interview are for CELLULITE STAR...
“Thanx for the patience and for your support. We appreciate it a lot! Female bands are the future, so let’s encourage them to show what they can do and probably we will write a new piece of history all together! Or a new piece of common life, which is really the same thing! Hallo there!”
